Dutch shipbuilding is being pitched as resilient and commercially driven, with a particular emphasis on smaller vessel sizes, design reuse and pragmatic technology choices. In the middle of that narrative sits Conoship International’s EasyMax family, which the source article says has already been used or specified for 12 newbuilds.

The most visible differentiator is a liquefied CO2 transport variant in Royal Wagenborg’s fleet. Carbon Destroyer 1 is described as newly commissioned and assigned to shuttle-type operation, loading 5,000-ton cargoes out of Esbjerg and discharging at the Greensand CO2 offshore storage site in the North Sea.

EasyMax: multi-purpose short-sea specs and the “easy” operating pitch

The EasyMax 14,000dwt multi-purpose cargo vessel type was developed by Conoship International of Groningen together with shipowner Royal Wagenborg Shipping and shipbuilder Royal Niestern Sander. The concept is presented as central to tenets of being easy to build, easy to operate, and easy to load, and it is described as using a 2,999kW main engine for efficient consumption per payload ton.

The same article ties EasyMax’s current expansion to production continuity planning: it says a batch of six second-generation EasyMax cargo vessel newbuilds was signed off by the Dutch operator last year. That package is described as ensuring production continuity for the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the coming years, and it also says the EasyMax 2 sextet includes provision for alternative fuels, enhanced shore power connectivity, and improved energy management.

Carbon Destroyer 1: CO2 containment, safety zones and DP2 offloading

The EasyMax flotilla is said to include a CO2 dedicated variant, named Carbon Destroyer 1. The CO2 transport design is described as tailored to the thermal behaviour of liquefied CO2, with specialized containment, integrated safety zones, and a high-redundancy energy and propulsion layout.

Offloading capability is treated as a design requirement rather than an operational afterthought. Carbon Destroyer 1 is said to use dynamic positioning to DP2 standard for year-round on-station offloading in open sea.

The article also frames the commercial underpinning: it says Royal Wagenborg’s investment is underpinned by a long-term charter agreement with UK-headquartered INEOS Group.

CIP propulsion platform: frequency-controlled diesel-electric and future fuel readiness

Conoship’s design work is described as extending beyond EasyMax through its CIP platform, spanning the size range up to 9,000dwt. The source article says CIP uses a frequency-controlled diesel-electric power and propulsion train that regulates screw speed based on engine load, water depth, and navigation route, using small gensets feeding twin electric propulsion motors.

Beyond the technology, the article notes procurement reach: it says recent transactions have featured 3,600dwt, 3,800dwt, and 6,400dwt versions for Dutch, German and Norwegian owners. It also says orders from those transactions went to shipyards Conoship collaborates with in the Groningen region of northern Netherlands, and also to builders in India and Turkey, with the CIP lineup later augmented by a 4,400dwt variant developed from the CIP3800.

Combi Freighter momentum: revised CF3850 attracts 50 sales and 38 deliveries

Separately from the EasyMax and CIP themes, the article says Damen Shipyards Group’s Combi Freighter (CF) portfolio production exemplifies Dutch prowess in short-sea cargo vessels. It places a spotlight on the latest version of the 90-metre CF3850 type, described as a 3,850dwt single-hold trader suited to multifarious bulk commodities and industrial products.

The source says the CF3850 was redesigned, updated and released at the start of the current decade after multiple vessels delivered over the preceding 20 years. It adds that, by the end of March 2026, the revised design attracted a total of 50 sales, with 38 delivered, in little more than five years.
